Grandson of Gandhi visits The Hague, Promoting a culture of Non-Violence with the special participation of Mr. Arun Gandhi.
Background
Arun Gandhi is the grandson of the late Mahatma Gandhi, and a nonviolence peace activist. He is visiting the Netherlands and Belgium between May 20 and May 24, 2009.
A joint group of NGOs working in human rights promotion and peace building fields, namely GHRD, Global Human Rights Defence, UNOY United Network of Young Peacebuilders, UNPO, Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization have taken the initiative by organizing a special event in The Hague, symbolic city of Peace and Justice, on May 22 2009, from 17.00 to 20.30 o'clock.
Objectives
The general objective of this initiative is to celebrate the visit of Mr. Arun Gandhi in the Netherlands and in particular:
* To promote a culture of non-violence among the community of Den Haag, and in particular among the migrant's community and young people.
* To discuss and share opinions on how to promote a culture of no-violence with a special focus on conflict situations and areas.
* To encourage activities of organizations, associations, cultural and ethnic groups which focus on the promotion of no-violence.
Target group
This will be organized as a public event. The main target groups are civil society organizations, NGOs, and youth organizations working in the field of human rights promotion, peace building, post conflict reconstruction and so on.
In particular, the participation of youth will be stressed by promoting the initiative among schools, universities, academies, students' associations, youth centers and youth cultural groups.
Provisional programme
16:15 Ceremonial gathering at the Statue of Gandhi, Hobbemaplein.
16:45 Silent walk from Gandhi monument toward Nutshuis, located in the city centre, for the start of the evening program.
17:15 Gathering at Nutshuis Riviervismarkt.
17:30 Welcome: Joint statements from Peace-building and Human Rights Promotion organizations.
17:45 Speech by Mr. Arun Gandhi: A Culture of Non-Violence .
18:00 Interactive open debate with challenging statement concerning "Promoting a culture of non violence in conflict situations".
19:00 Open House: Networking among organizations with distribution of promotional material through information stands. Opportunity to increase cultural awareness through "Cultural Exposition" stands like sand painting and calligraphy by Tibetan artists.
20:00 Cultural Performance to Close Event.
Nederlands
Op 22 Mei van 16.15 tot 20.30 zal Arun Gandhi, kleinzoon van Mahatma Gandhi, deelnemen aan een Multicultureel jongeren-event in het centrum van Den Haag.
Internationale Vredes- en Mensenrechten organisaties zoals United Network of Young Peacebuilders (UNOY), Global Human Rights Defence (GHRD) en Unrecognised Nations and Peoples Organisation (UNPO) gaan in op de vraag welke rol Non-Violence spelt in hun werk.
De middag begint met een kranslegging bij het Gandhi Monument op het Hobbemaplein gevolgt door een stille tocht naar het Nutshuis, Rieviervismarkt, alwaar om 17.30 het avondprogramma begint.
Afrikaanse, Aziatische en Nederlandse Jongeren groepen, studenten en immigranten organisaties zullen met Arun Gandhi deelnemen aan een interactief debat met scherpe actuele stellingen. De avond wordt afgesloten met een netwerkingmarkt en wereldmuziek.
